essay

this is my essay about Lloyd Newson dv8. I got a pass but I am going to redo it so I can get a better mark
this is my essay-

Lloyd Newson

Dv8

Lloyd Newson was born in 1954 in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. Lloyd Newson trained as a psychologist he then decided to pursue a career in dancing. Fortunately Newson got funded to go and study in England at the London contemporary dance school.
Newson danced and choreographed at many companies before starting his own.  This included New Zealand ballet, modern dance ensemble, impulse dance theatre, extemporary dance theatre and one extra dance theatre.

Lloyd Newson has been the director of DV8 physical theatre since 1986. DV8 physical theatre explores areas of dance which haven’t been looked at before. Lloyd Newsons choreography has made a dramatic change to contemporary dance. DV8 exposes human emotions and feelings. Also he investigates questions of sex, identity, and relationships, as seen in the dance enter achillis.

DV8 is all about taking risks. Newson decided to call his dance physical theatre because it indicated a departure from the contemporary dance style and Newson thinks that every move you dance must have a reason.

Physical theatre demands athletic physicality and stamina from Newson’s dancers. The use of weight exchange, lifts and holds in Newson’s work is fixed in contact improvisation, usually performed with a faster, more violent dynamic. Sometimes in DV8 physical theatre the dancers hurl their body onto another at speed, they climb up the body, maybe falling or getting thrown off. Lloyd Newson has choreographed many dances, three very good ones are cost of living , strange fish,  and enter achillis .

Cost of living is a dance, by Lloyd Newson. It is one of his best. This dance is about challenging the views of modern society and asking about the value of money.

Strange fish is also an interesting dance by Lloyd Newson. This dance looks at our quest for some one to love and some thing or some one to believe in. Strange fish mixes religion iconography with humour, physicality tacking it further then traditional dance.

Awards
Prix Italia special prize, music and art 1994
Best chorography, Festival International Danse Visions 1994
Best Stage Performance Reworked for the Camera, IMZ Da screen 1993
Pierre Cardin Award, Grand Prix International Video-Danse 1993

Enter achillis is one of Lloyd Newson’s dances. This dance is about men’s emotions. It tries to express men’s emotions and sexuality.

Other good choreographers and dancers are Martha Graham

Graham was born in May 11th, 1894 and died in April 1, 1991 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Martha Graham’s force on dance was amazing and often compared to that of Picasso’s on painting. She was an amazing choreographer and dancer of contemporary dance.

Martha Graham said- “I wanted to begin not with characters or ideas, but with movements . . .I wanted significant movement. I did not want it to be beautiful or fluid. I wanted it to be fraught with inner meaning, with excitement and surge.”

Isadora Duncan was born, May 26, 1877 in San Francisco, California, U.S, and died September 14, 1927 in nice, France. She was a very good dancer and choreographer. Her dream to be a dancer took her to Chicago and New York but Unfortionly she wasn’t as succefull as she hoped she would be. Duncan never gave up, she ended up being very succefull in Europe and America.

Cunningham was born in April 16, 1919 in Centralia, Washington and died on July 26, 2009. He was a choreographer and dancer. Through out most of his life he had been an American dancer. He was a very succefull dancer and Unfortionly he died last year.

Lloyd newson is an amazing dancer and choreographer like Martha Graham, Isadora Duncan and Merce Cunningham although Newson is different in his approach, as he believes that his dance must have reason, emotion and drama.
